Abstract:

This paper reviews the literature in computational semantics relating to the representation of distinctions among similar word-senses and the acquisition of lexical knowledge in general. This will support research into automatically acquiring finer word-sense distinctions from on-line resources and representing these distinctions using Bayesian networks. Most of the review covers Computational Linguistics. But it also discusses some of the related work in Linguistics, Philosophy, and Psychology. In addition, it covers some work on Statistical Inference, especially that related to Bayesian networks.
