Overview

This course is an introduction to sound and music with an emphasis on the Linux platform. The course will cover the basics of sound theory and production and its use in musical applications. There will be an equal mix of creative topics, more on the music side of things, and technical topics, which is more on the sound side. Assignments will also be both creative and technical. Some of the creative assignments will cover anything from sound design to complete production of a musical piece. Technical assignments will involve programming either in C, or in the visual language pd.

Since we will be using the Linux platform to carry out these assignments, knowledge of Linux/UNIX and the programming language C are preferred, but not essential since the presented material and the assignments will cover everything that is necessary to understand the principles. Computers will be provided in the CS department, so a login name for the CS domain are needed, and will be provided if you do not already have one.
