APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from the April 26, 2001, meeting were approved.

OLD BUSINESS:
Pharmacy Information Management System: The SHC has purchased a pharmacy system. The system purchased, originally based in DOS, has now been built for Windows. We are the first student health center to use the new version. All of the bugs have not yet been fully worked out.
2. Student Affairs Restructuring: Dr. Wolf retired as Vice President of Student Affairs in July 2001. Dr. Juan Franco is acting as interim vice president. A search committee has been assembled and hopes are to fill the position by January or February of 2002.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Annual Report: Lori McKee reviewed the SHC’s annual report for Fiscal Year 2000/2001, highlighting the following:
27,528 total patient encounters, a 5.7% increase from previous year
4,374 nurse station visits, a 0.64% decrease from previous year
21,634 practitioner visits, a 6.6% increase from previous year
472 psychiatric visits, a 59% increase from previous year
109 dermatology visits, a 34% decrease from previous year
104 gynecology visits, a 14% increase from previous year
51 nutritionist visits, a 27% decrease from previous year
1,216 phone calls to nurses received, a 25% increase from previous year
24,549 prescriptions were filled, a 0.5% increase from previous year
15,325 laboratory tests performed, a 14.7% increase from previous year
588 Xray exams, a 37% increase over initial projected number for this first year
6,000 insurance claims were filed, a 27% increase compared to previous year
4,116 health education contacts were made, a 14.5% increase compared to previous year
2. Insurance Utilization: Report was not available for this meeting.
3. Depression Screening: The SHC plans to participate in the national depression screening project. On 10/11/01, one month after the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks, three different times will be available for screening. The first is 10:30 a.m. and the next is Noon, both at Corbett Center. The third will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Student Health Center. The Counseling Center will make a presentation. There will

also be an on-line depression screening tool available, which is structured to be used anonymously. The website is: www.mentalhealthscreening.org/screening/login.asp?keyword=choices. The keyword to type in is “choices.” The SHC will run a series of four ads in the Round Up. Karin Diener will distribute flyers, and the Counseling Center will provide posters for doors where events will be held. On the day of the screenings, the SHC will set up a table on the first floor of Corbett to help publicize the event.
4. Open House: The Student Health Center has decided it would be more beneficial to students to hold an open house in the Fall rather than Spring. An open house is scheduled for 10/31/01 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lori McKee invited help from the various campus health groups in conducting various screenings. There will be tours and refreshments. Jera Elza stated she would be able to get volunteers.
5. Health Education Coordinator: Karin Diener asked for any available assistance in posting monthly health education topics on bathroom stall doors, as well as help with the National Depression Screening Day, and the SHC Open house. She can be reached at 646-3138 or by e-mail at: kdiener@nmsu.edu.
6. BE Magazine: The first issue of this new magazine was distributed. The SHC will be receiving this quarterly.
OTHER COMMENTS:
Tony Mahung commented on the inadequate space to accommodate patient lines at the front desk. Mr. Mahung also inquired why some lines appear to move faster than others and suggested that a snake line be implemented. Lori McKee explained that patients with appointments are given priority over walk-in patients in order to expedite their visits first. The check in process, which includes pulling a patient’s chart, is begun for patients with appointments before they even arrive, whereas the check in process for walk-in patients cannot begin until the person gets to the check-in counter. Walk-in patients are processed on a first come, first served basis. Ms. McKee also pointed out that at the beginning of a semester, new demographic information must be obtained from patients who have changed residences or phone numbers, and this takes more time
The Consultant Gynecologist will not be at the SHC this year, however she is offering phone consultations with our practitioners when needed. There are now two staff practitioners trained to perform colposcopies. The need for a Consultant Gynecologist will be reviewed for next year.
Tony Mahung asked whether the SHC had been contacted with regard to disaster preparedness in light of the recent terrorist attacks. Lori McKee explained that the SHC is not a disaster treatment center. Patricia Frank is researching information on biological threats. Mike Ellis stated that the campus tunnels had been cleaned out and that Ben Woods would be able to provide a location map.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
The next meeting is: Thursday, October 25, 2001, Room 167, Student Health Center.
Respectfully submitted,
Lori McKee, Administrative Director, Student Health Center
Chairperson
