APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the October 28, 2002, meeting were approved.

OLD BUSINESS: None

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Stats: Comparing to last year through October, the number of patient visits increased by 2.14%, prescriptions decreased by 3.89%, Lab decreased by 5.52%; Xray decreased by 10%; Nurse visits increased by 8.65%; Physician On Call decreased by 50%; and, Saturday clinic increased by 11.6%.

After January 1st, the SHC will have available during Saturday clinic an “after hours” pharmacy which will be able to supply basics such as antibiotics , tetanus shots, and morning after treatment.

2. Health Education Update: SHC is still providing STD presentations. There has been a great demand for them this semester, and it is difficult to keep us with the demand. They are winding down now for the Fall semester, and will pick up again in Spring.

3. Insurance Update: Some people have complained that insurance cards were received late. However, everyone was supplied with a temporary card in their enrollment brochure. The enrollment deadline was extended by approximately two weeks which caused the University to be later than usual in issuing the premium check. Claims are starting to be paid now. Students now have deductibles and co-pays which are being billed to student accounts. The SHC cannot waive insurance charges as they could with the previous insurance company, because it has no way of knowing what amount of the account is made up of deductible and co-payment charges and what amounts will be paid by the insurance company. Registration is approaching. Those students with more than a $100 balance owing on their accounts will have holds placed on their accounts and they will not be able to register.

Average balance for health services?: This is unknown. Enrollment is down since going with the new insurance program. Students are seeking and finding other coverage programs. Daniel Balizan will bring before ASNMSU the idea of forming a committee to take on the search and bidding for future insurance plans. The time for the next review is fast approaching.

4. Thanksgiving Holiday Hours: SHC will be open Wednesday, 11/27 from 8 am to 5 pm. It will be closed Thursday and Friday, 11/28 and 11/29, and there will be no Saturday clinic on 11/30. The Physician On Call service will be available.

5. Sexual Assault/Date Rape: There have been some cases which appear that patients may have been the victims of drugging while in Juarez. The SHC wants students to be educated and warned about such occurrences. Be sure to have a designated driver and a designated friend who will make sure you get back home safely.

6. Patient Transportation: Practitioners have paid for cab fare to transport patients to outside providers when dental services were promptly necessary and in other such situations. Lori McKee inquired whether ASNMSU would be able to set aside a small fund to cover such expenses. There may be five or six required rides in a month’s time. Daniel Balizan thought it would be possible and will inquire.

7. Other

  1. Anonymous HIV Testing: The SHC no longer offers this due to the two extensive training and red tape involved with the state procedures. Anonymous testing is still available at no charge at the Department of Health. The non-anonymous HIV test at the SHC costs $5. Such test results will only be disclosed to those for whom the patient has authorized a release.

  1. Deanna Lavanty will be graduating this semester. She will e-mail the name of her replacement to Bonnie Russell.

NEXT MEETING: To be announced for February 2003.

Respectfully submitted,
