APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the September 27, 2001, meeting were approved.

OLD BUSINESS:

  1. Depression Screening: A total of 60 people participated in the on-line and live Depression Screening programs held on 10/11/01. Thirty-seven of the 60 or 62% of those screened, screened positive for some form of depression or manic depression. The screening was one part of a three part series. A screening on Eating Disorders is scheduled for February, and a screening for Alcohol Use is scheduled for March. How these screenings will be coordinated has not yet been established.

  1. Open House: The Student Health Center Open House will be held on Wednesday, October 31, 2001, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. All SHAC members, please contact their representatives to have them available to assist during these times. Decorating will begin at 12:00 noon.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Insurance Utilization: Total premiums collected for the 2000-01 policy year totaled $657,675. Claims paid for the same year totaled $794,474 which translated to a 1.21% loss ratio. Pending claims for the 2000-01 year total $216,205 if all claims are paid loss ratio would extend to 1.54%. Fall enrollment in the plan is down by 25% probably due to the 40% premium increase for the year. Based on industry trends the plan could be facing another substantial rate increase. In Spring 2002 a determination will be made if the Insurance should go out for bid.

2. Flu Shots: Flu vaccine is not going to be available at the SHC this year. Due to limited supply and the college population not being as “at risk” as others, the SHC is not expected to get any vaccine. Those who have chronic health conditions, or work in health care should be vaccinated if the opportunity arises. Check with MMC for dates for their clinic.

3. HIPAA: Health Insurance Portability And Accountability Act of 1996 is a federal mandate that will affect health care providers over the next three years. The SHC is making changes to meet the requirements within the law. By October 2002, changes have to be made to meet the requirements for electronic data interchange. By April 2004, changes will affect the privacy of health information, and, by an undetermined date in 2005, security mechanisms must be in place to protect health information. The SHC has already begun to make changes to comply with the law. The Advisory Committee will be apprized of changes as they occur or are recommended.
