APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the December 4, 2003 meeting were approved.

OLD BUSINESS

  1. Accreditation Survey- L. McKee reported that the official accreditation response from AAAHC had not been received by the Student Health Center. The comments from the inspector had been positive at the closing of the inspection. The recommendations for change had been largely with regard to the Quality Improvement studies. The QI studies will be reevaluated with regard to investigating problematic areas in the quality of care throughout the Student Health Center. L. McKee mentioned that she expected a full 3-year accreditation and will share the official results at the next meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

  1. Stats- L. McKee reported the stats for January 2004. See attached.

  1. Insurance Update & Renewal- L. McKee reported that student enrollment on the insurance plan was 369 for Spring 2004, which is up 7.26% from 344 in Fall 2003. L. McKee reported that the current insurance offer for the next academic year includes a 6% increase in premiums. Currently, premiums collected are approximately $345,000. Claims to date were $105,923.42 with $62,593.27 being paid by insurance. See attached. L. McKee estimated the insurance company to be on track to profit 48% this year. She advised the committee to support investigating other alternatives rather than to accept a 6% increase next year. The committee concurred. The insurance options will be further discussed at the insurance committee meeting on March 4, 2004. All members were encouraged to attend.

  1. Health Education Report- D. Gilliam reported that Patty Chavana has given four STD presentations and one Contraception presentation this semester. She also hosted the National Eating Disorders Screening Event on February 18. The event included an educational table in Corbett Center and was covered by the KRWG television station and in the Round-Up. She also scheduled a Women’s Health and Body Image presentation on February 19, which was cancelled due to lack of attendance. Teaming with the public health department and Camino de Vida, D. Gilliam also hosted an HIV Awareness Event on February 20 with a condom distribution table in Corbett Center. The event included an HIV+ speaker from Camino De Vida. Approximately 11 participants attended the presentation. K. Sanchez also informed the committee of the development of the peer education program at the Student Health Center. The five undergraduate students are participating as part of their field experience in the Bachelor of Community Health program. The peer educators are both learning about college health and participating in the health education programs mentioned by D. Gilliam. Future health education efforts include a spring break outreach event and the National Alcohol Abuse Screening event in April.

  1. SHAC Meeting & Spring Break- The committee agreed to schedule the next meeting on March 18, 2004, at 2 pm.

With no other matters, the meeting was adjourned.
