MINUTES

October 30, 2003

Present: Lori McKee, Paul La Porte, Evelyn Noyes, Michael O’Larey, Karin Sanchez, Melanie Martin

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the September 25, 2003, meeting were approved.

OLD BUSINESS

1. Accreditation Survey Update- Lori McKee informed the Committee that the AAAHC accreditation survey had been set for 12/4-12/5, 2003 with the accreditation expiring at the end of 01/04. McKee noted that posting announcing the accreditation had been placed in prominent locations within the building and also will be advertised in the Round Up giving students the opportunity to comment to the survey. In addition, McKee noted that Advisory Members could be asked to participate in the survey process by meeting with the surveyor.

2. Insurance Update- Lori McKee reported that insurance numbers and enrollment were not available at the time of the meeting. A meeting has been scheduled with Student Resources and a representative will be coming to campus on 11/5/03. During that visit utilization figures, enrollment and projected renewal changes will be discussed. Information will be provided to the committee when it becomes available.

NEW BUSINESS

1. SHC Stats- Lori McKee presented the stats for the Student Health Center from July-September/03. The stats included: patient encounters increase by 323 or 5.46%, Rxs decrease by 95 or -1.97%, laboratory increase by 313 or 10.12%, x-ray increase by 40 or 29.63%, nurse visits decrease by 195 or -16.90% , physician on-call service increase 23 or 287%, and Saturday clinic decrease by 2 or -4.35%. The SHC has experienced a busy fall start up with an increase of 518 visits in September as compared to 02 figures.

2. Flu Shots- McKee announced that flu vaccines were in and were available to all students for $10. High risk illnesses were notified via letter that the vaccine was available. McKee also noted that the SHC has received notification that actual flu has been documented in New Mexico. Flu also mimics symptoms of SARS so the vaccine is highly recommend for everyone. Flu clinics had already been completed or scheduled for the athletic teams participating in winter sports with the exception women’s basketball which is pending a date.

3. Aggie Experience- Lori McKee reported that the SHC will be participating in the second Aggie Experience which was an outreach event coordinated through Admissions. The goal of the program was to have high school seniors come to campus and experience life as a college student with programs focused on admission, enrollment, campus life and extra curricular activities, namely the NMSU Football game. Two hundred- fifity seniors were scheduled to attend the progam on 11/1 with Karin Sanchez participating in an information fair and Lori McKee participating in a parent’s information panel.

4. Health Education- Karin Sanchez reported the results of the the two outreach health education programs in October. The National Depression Screening yielded a total of 50 which included 23 surveying for anxiety and 16 for mild depression. A health fair was also hosted for students in Corbett Center in which a number of students were screened for blood pressure, glucose, and provided with a variety of information about the SHC, prevention, and illness. The November calendar has the Great American Smokeout on 11/20/03. This program will be co-sponsored with GAMMA and FYI. Karin Sanchez commented that the group was focusing on women and minorities since recent smoking campaigns have targeted these groups. Melanie Martin also conveyed a high rate for the gay and lesbian population and encouraged the group to reach out to the student group on campus for additional support.

Lori McKee also announced that a new health education GA would be visiting campus on 11/7/03.

Her name is Demetria Gilliam and she will be replacing Karin Sanchez when she completes her

degree work this semester. Demetria will be joining the staff in 1/04.

5. Other Matters- The committee discussed the fact that since the information for the insurance was not available and since the next regular meeting was not scheduled until February 04 that they would like to convene again before the end of the semester. It was determined that due to scheduling conflicts the first available date would be 12/4/03. That concurrently was the date the surveyor would be on site for the AAAHC visit. Lori McKee noted that the short duration of SHAC meetings would not conflict with the visit and would allow the surveyor to meet members of the Committee if he so desired. It was agreed that the meeting would be held on 12/4/03 at 2:00 p.m.

NEXT MEETING: December 4, 2003; 2:00 p.m.; Student Health Center Rm. 167

Respectfully submitted,
