Presenter and Attendee Instructions

In keeping with the concept of workshop, we are putting forth a few restrictions and suggestions that are intended to stimulate and allow for extended discussions during the workshop.

  1. Firstly, presenters will have a maximum of 15 minutes for a "formal" presentation. This limit will be strictly enforced.
  2. Presenters should focus on ideas rather than work. Feel free to make radical statements and claims.
  3. Presentations should end with two slides: the next to last slide should list reasons why the presented work will fail, and then the last slide should list reasons why it will succeed. Reasons for both can be technical (e.g., will or will not scale up to real systems) or practical (e.g., habit-bound programmers are unwilling to change).
  4. Presentations will end with a nominal 5 minute question period. Questions that raise issues for longer discussion will be put on hold for the session discussion period.
  5. Sessions will end with a discussion period (20-30 minutes) that will focus on issues raised during the paper presentations and other issues that encompass the whole session topic.
  6. Attendees are expected to participate. There will not be a brain check at the door!
  7. Attendees should familiarize themselves with the papers before the day of the workshop. All papers are available on this website.
  8. Attendees are encouraged to develop at least one critical question per paper before the day of the workshop.

Meeting the suggestions above will hopefully make WODA 2003 a successful workshop and will encourage participants and others to consider more WODAs in the future. We look forward to seeing you at ICSE!

Logistically, all presenters should bring a copy of their presentation on floppy or CD, not just on a laptop. There will not be time to switch computers in between each presentation. Please follow general ICSE speaker guidelines where appropriate. Any speaker who wishes to can send their Powerpoint presentation to us and I will burn them onto a CD and bring it. If you need other software (such as Acrobat) for your presentation, please contact us beforehand.
