Hello Ivan!

In Spring 2019, I took your System Administration class, and I remember loudly complaining at the time about having to write in Perl for some assignments, even saying at one point "why can't we just use Python?" I'm writing now to admit that, after graduating and less than one year into my first job (a mix of software development and dev-ops), I have managed to become a) obsessed with Perl and b) completely disenchanted with Python.

Over the past two months or so, I have read nearly all of Programming Perl cover-to-cover and have written several programs with it. I now understand its utility for scripting and sysadmin as well as why Python simply isn't an adequate substitute.

Anyway, part of my reason for writing this is to apologize for being so wrong about Perl. Another part is to give you something you can show to your current students next time one of them complains about Perl. Now you have a real example of one of your students doing a complete reversal of their opinion on Python vs. Perl.
