CS 478 is an introductory course in Computer Security. The aim of this course is to introduce fundamental concepts in security and privacy and how they apply to computers and our interaction with them. The emphasis of the course will be on understanding requirements of security in different contexts, the aspects of security/privacy that a computer engineer/programmer needs to account for while designing software and protocols and the engineering trade-offs involved in the said design. By the time the student is done with the course, he/she will have a broad idea in the area of security and privacy including the concepts, the requirements, and the practical implementation challenges. To improve understanding of the concepts, two to three multi-week projects including design and implementation will be assigned. The goal is for the students to learn about computer security, infer the requirements of a secure system, and be prepared to design secure systems and protocols in the future.

• Understand the need for security and privacy in systems and protocol design.
• Ability to understand the important building blocks of security:
  1. hashing,
  2. message authentication codes,
  3. symmetric encryption,
  4. asymmetric encryption,
  5. symmetric key infrastructure,
  6. public key infrastructure, and
  7. certificates.
• Critically analyze and understand the building blocks; and
• Possess the ability to utilize the building blocks in designing secure systems and secure and privacy-preserving protocols.

Moreover, you must
• take both exams, and
  
• turn in at least half of the homework assignments, and
• submit at least half of the group projects, and
• (for CS 513 students only) present your individual topic or project to the class and submit your report.
  Otherwise you will get an F (or U in case of S/U).

Beyond that, your grade will be assigned on the following scale:

A:	91-100%
B:	81-90%
C:	71-80%
D:	61-70%

Grading Standards

If in your opinion there is a problem with grading, you need to inform me of the situation as soon as possible.

Assignments and projects are NOT equally weighted.
• Each assignment and project will count towards the final grade according to its total points value. For example, if one assignment has total value of 100 points and a second assignment has total value of 50 points, then the first assignment counts twice more towards the final grade in the course then the second assignment.
• Each assignment question will be given a clearly stated maximum point value, on the original assignment, or project. Subparts of questions may or may not have such a maximum. The points don't have to add up to 100.
• All programming projects and assignments need to be done in C/C++. Programs written in any other languages will not be graded.
• All assignments and projects must be submitted via Canvas. Assignments must be typed ( hand written assignments will not be graded). Documented code of programming projects must be submitted along with documentation, make and readme files. Font size 10pts.

Due Dates / Late Submissions

Late submissions for both assignments and projects are penalized 20% per day and you can be late at most 3 days.
You will receive 0 points if you submit your assignment or project more then 72 hours late.

• If, as a result of an emergency (such as a medical emergency), you are unable to turn in an assignment on time, let me know the circumstances as soon as possible. If, in my judgment, the circumstances were an unavoidable emergency, I will take the homework late without penalty. I reserve the right to require documentation of the circumstances.
• Note: conflicts with homework in other classes, simply failing to complete an assignment on time, and over sleeping, are not reasons I will accept as no penalty excuse for late homework.

Attendance

Although your attendance will not directly project into your grade you are responsible for all material covered in class and in assigned reading, and for turning in homeworks and projects, whether you are present or not.

A Note on Incomplete

The University's policy on assigning Incomplete on classes is stated in the catalog as:
Instructors may assign I grades only if the student is unable to complete the course due to circumstances beyond the student's control that develop after the last day to withdraw from the course. Examples of appropriate circumstances include documented illness, documented death or crisis in the student's immediate family, and similar circumstances. Job related circumstances are generally not appropriate grounds for assigning an I grade. In no case is an I grade to be used to avoid the assigning of D, F, U , or RR grades for marginal or failing work.

Plagiarism / Unacceptable Behavior

Assignments (including programs) in this class are to be completed individually or, in case of group projects, within your team only. Copying of assignments, source code, programs, and any part of these without acknowledging the original source is plagiarism and will not be tolerated.
