Dr. Karen Villaverde
Short Biography

Education

I have a PhD in Computer Science from New Mexico state University (NMSU) (2002) and a BSCS and a MSCS from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). As a PhD student, I worked under the direction of Dr. Enrico Pontelli in the area of parallel processing and I was supported by a GAANN fellowship from the US department of Education. As a Masters student, I worked under the direction of Dr. Vladik Kreinovich in the area of interval computations and I was supported by a NSF fellowship.

Research

My doctoral research consisted in developing an efficient methodology to exploit OR-parallelism on distributed memory systems.

My master's research consisted in developing linear time algorithms to locate local minima and maxima of a function given approximate measurement results, i.e., intervals. Later on, we developed parallel algorithms whose running time was logarithmic.

My current areas of research are interval computations and educational computer gaming

20 master students who worked under my direction in my research areas have already graduated. 19 undergraduate students have worked under my direction in my research areas. I have participated as a committee member of 37 master and PhD students.

Work experience

After I finished with my studies at UTEP, I worked for a telecommunications company (Nortel Networks) as a software engineer and systems engineer for 3 and a half years. Then, I decided that I wanted to study for my PhD and came to NMSU.

I worked as a college assistant professor from the Fall of 2001 to the Spring of 2007 at the computer science department at NMSU. During this time, I taught CS372 Data structures and algorithms, CS272 Introduction to data structures, CS209 Computer animation, CS172 Computer science I, CS167/467 C programming, and CS110 Computer literacy.

Since the Fall 2007, I have been working as an assistant professor in the computer science dept at NMSU. During this time I have taught CS479/579 Game design and development, CS479/579 Game programming in Java, CS471 Programming languages I, CS448 Senior project, CS278 Discrete mathematics for computer science, CS272 Introduction to data structures, CS209 Computer animation, and CS172 Computer science I.

Hobbies

My hobbies are praying, reading the bible and other Christian books, walking, gardening, taking care of my little Chihuahua dog, watching science fiction movies and programs, eating delicious meals with my friends and family, making new friends, and learning about other cultures' customs and foods.

Family

I have a younger sister who is studying psychology and an older brother who is a medical doctor. My mom is a school teacher and my dad is a high school teacher. I am the first professor in my family.
