NMSU ATE National Visiting Committee Visit 3/29/06

Summary
The Committee's Report concluded that we are
making a good effort to solve a tough problem. Their recommendations for
improving the project include: more attention to the human-computer interface
of the software we are developing, more attention to the marketing of the
distance ed programs, seek collaborators in New Mexico such as Intel,
and several other excellent recommendations.
Participants
- The Committee: Chris Dede (Harvard), Art Karshmer (USF and SF),
Randy Shumaker (UCF), Steve Sanchez (NM Educational Consultant).
All are former NSF Program Directors. Two other NSF-approved
committee members elected not to attend at the last moment.
- Partner Institution Delegates from Northern New Mexico College
and Crownpoint Institute of Technology were invited but chose not
to drive to Las Cruces.

Meeting Place
The meeting was held in the nice meeting room at the
NMSU College of Extended Learning, except for the lunch, tour, and dinner.
The College of Extended Learning
is in Milton Hall room 185. This is fairly central
on campus, across from the Corbett Student Union. It is in the upper middle
of the
main campus map,
or on the lower left corner of "Campus Map 1b".
Travel
The nearest commercial airport is El Paso Texas (ELP), which is 45 minutes
away on Interstate 10, branching into Interstate 25 where it starts; NMSU is
the first exit (exit 1) on Interstate 25. It is recommended that visitors
rent a car to maximize your travel convenience; there is an airport shuttle,
but if you do not wish to rent a car we would be pleased to arrange
transportation for you ourselves. Please let us know if you do not plan to
rent a car and would like airport transportation.
Lodging and Arriving on Campus
Please book yourself at the Hilton Las Cruces (505)522-4300, (800)284-0616,
705 S Telshor Blvd. The Hilton is about 3 miles from campus; we will send a
van to collect you and bring you back to your hotel, so you don't have to
worry about parking.
