I wish these bands were still around
I like a lot of bands. Unfortunately, most of the greatest bands I've
ever heard aren't around anymore. I am so annoyed about this that I
decided to vent my frustration online. This list grows all the time. If
you also love some of these bands, feel free to send me an email and
commiserate.
Broken Up - Alas, they were gone too soon (similar to "at all")
- 238 - This was the straw that broke the camel's back and got me
to put up this page. I missed seeing them twice in concert in the space
of 3 months and I was mad. Then they broke up three months later.
- Aleixa - Techno/Industrial with awesome female vocals. These
guys were the featured band of my radio show Not In Mexico (probably
because Matt loved them so much too). If you can find Disfigured
somewhere, you should grab it. I think I got in on eBay or something.
Honey Lake was good too.
- Chasing Furies - I saw these guys in concert one time. They
opened for Jars of Clay in a baseball stadium (talk about crappy venues).
They were so good that I was totally blown away. I went out and bought
their CD as soon as I had some cash. Of course, there were like two other
songs and then they broke up. Let me repeat: they were so good that at
this horrible venue they got under my skin. I've been to a lot of
concerts and the only other time that happened was when I heard Plankeye
play Bicycle (not as good when I bought the CD). Maybe seeing Sarah Slean
came close too - but that's it.
- Estis P@rc - I spent a whole year hunting down Sometimes Not
because the other album was so great (now if I could just find the
lyrics). Of course, I didn't hear about them until after they broke up so
I don't know how they were in concert, but I wish I did.
- Fringe - I bought the CD randomly from Sad Puppy records (which
lasted all for like a week and a half). I didn't really care about it for
a while. Now, I listen to it all the time. I wish I knew what happened
to these guys.
- Joe Christmas - I liked these guys when they were actually
together but it's only now, years later, that I have grown to really love
their music. I think that song Scrabble Girl is what really does it.
Well, I could list a bunch of their songs that are great but I'll save
some space.
- Mineral - Unfortunately, The Gloria Record just doesn't live up
to how great Mineral was. &Serenading was such a great song that I still
can't get over it. And MD. I wish I could get a real copy of that song.
Anybody have it lying around?
- Puller - I don't know why, but I just love their music. I also
like most of the stuff that the band members have done since then (Michael
Lewis solo, Claire's Audience, Sequoyah) - not that any of those are
still around either. I saw them in concert right before it ended though
and they pretty much sucked. It didn't help that they had a borrowed
guitar player and their bass player quit the night before. Also, the
venue really sucked (E9 in El Paso).
- Remember August - Here's a band that I could never find any
information about. They put out one album on Puller's indie label and
that's all I know. That album is still awesome though.
- Sixpence None the Richer - Okay, so they weren't doing so hot
for a while, but I was still enjoying the stuff I heard from them. They
also did more than one of my favorite concerts ever.
- Eastmountainsouth - This is one of those bands I found out
about right after they broke up. Really, they put out an amazing album
and I really wish I could have seen them live. I don't know if my wife
and I have one of those "our song" things, but if we do it might be an
Eastmountainsouth song.
- Slow Coming Day - I knew this was going to happen. I missed
seeing them in St Louis one time and then I drove over an hour to see them
another time - only to find that the venue had gone out of business (they
still did the show in that town but I wasn't able to find out where it
was). I think this was one of the few bands where I greatly enjoyed every
single song they put out.
Kind of Broken Up - It is hard to tell if these guys are broken up
or not. I'm still unhappy about it.
- Fleming & John - I don't know what happened to these guys.
They put out two great albums and several good covers and random crap.
Then they just started working on everyone else's albums. I guess that's
where the money is. I don't know that they're broken up (especially since
they're married), I'm just concerned that they'll never actually put out
another album.
- Luxury - I remember seeing their third CD at a store and being
like, "Is this the same band?". It was worth buying it just on the
off-chance. Sure enough, it was them. I think after every album they've
broken up. Now they don't claim to be broken up but I just find a cover
every year or so. There is no question that this is one of the greatest
bands ever.
- Painted by Moses - I think this is another band that I was
introduced to through a random disc from Jesse Sprinkle. They've been
promising a new album for over years now. I've stopped holding my
breath. Update: I think their website finally disappeared.
- Poor Old Lu - They broke up when I was in high school. Then
they did a reunion concert the other year. I flew out for it. It was
awesome. Then they put out another album and swore they'd do some shows
for it but never did (well, I think they did like two). Of course, good
stuff has come out of them breaking up (Rose Blossom Punch, Aaron
Sprinkle's solo stuff, The World Inside, Holiday Runner, etc.). Anyway,
they're also in my top three favorite bands ever.
