The Young Women In Computing Program was started in 2006 and is funded by a National Science Foundation grant called Broadening Participation in Computing.
The goal of this program is to gain the interest of young women in the various fields of computer science. For five weeks during the summer, 12-15 girls come together to learn about different areas where computer science is applied and just to have fun. The areas the camp focuses on are animation with Alice, robotics, web programming, and bioinformatics. The camp is organized so that these girls can become confident in their CS abilities and hopefully pursue careers in computer science, a field in which they are a minority.
The program hopes to expand by doing middle school and high school road shows beginning early in 2009 and to create a college mentoring program for young women who are majoring in computer science. The application process for the 2009 camp will begin in March of 2009.
