The department has 14 full-time faculty members, several part-time and adjunct faculty members, two programming and system support staff and two secretaries. The Graduate School provides twelve Graduate Assistant positions per year. Faculty research grants provide several additional Research Assistant positions. Each year the department hosts several visiting faculty members and one or two postdoctoral fellows from around the world.
For the Fall 2002 semester, there were 274 undergraduate computer science majors and 94 graduate students. Between Summer 2001 and Summer 2002, 30 B.S. and 17 M.S. degrees were awarded. The number of Ph.D. degrees awarded per year typically varies from zero to four. In addition to our regularly-enrolled graduate students, we have a number of foreign graduate students spending from one semester to a year studying towards a degree in their home countries. In a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students, NMSU CS was ranked 32nd in the nation in "overall satisfaction" as reported by our graduate students.
Our undergraduate program has been accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Board. Curriculum 90 and the expanding importance of parallel computing have caused the department to re-evaluate and overhaul its undergraduate curriculum. In addition a major effort has been undertaken to improve and enhance our introductory programming classes. This work has been supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation. Several proposals have been funded to obtain resources to support the development of a new freshman multi paradigm programming and mathematical foundation course as well as for the development of special purpose laboratories to support upper division undergraduate courses.
